In 2006 Norfolkline were looking for a new Time and Attendance system for their Larkhall site. This was to replace an existing swipe card system, which had been broken for about a year.

An important requirement of the new system was that it would electronically log employees' clockings and that it was a PC based system.

Another important requirement for the replacement time and attendance system was that it had to properly handle the Working Time Directive so that it could be used to demonstrate Norfolkline's compliance with the WTD legislation.

Mark Thomson from Norfolkline explained: “We contacted four Time and Attendance vendors and narrowed this down to two, we asked each of these to demonstrate their system to us. We decided on Tensor because they fulfilled our criteria - a simple to use off the shelf package - and competitively priced."”

A WinTA Lite system was installed by Tensor in November 2006 and the system "went live" on 1st January, 2007. The installation went smoothly with Norfolkline's engineering staff installing the 240 volt fused spurs and the Tensor engineers' installing the actual system.

Initially, there was a little resistance amongst staff to the new system. However, this quickly evaporated once they realised that it would of benefit to them as it kept an accurate record of working hours. “The speed and ease-of-use of Tensor's smart cards helped in making the system acceptable to the workforce,” said Mark. “I think the employees assumed we were getting the system to check up on them, but that wasn't the case. We just wanted to a way of meeting our Working Time Directive obligations and an easy way to store and access the electronic clockings data.”

Mark told the Tensor reporter that they had no formal training on the WinTA Lite time and attendance system. “The system is fairly intuitive” explained Mark, “Tensor engineers gave us a 'driving lesson' when the system was installed where they quickly ran through all the important sections of the software, and we took it on from there.”

When asked if he had used the Tensor Helpdesk Mark replied “You have a Helpdesk?! I normally just call the Tensor engineer if I have any problem, and it's sorted!"”

Mark described that “WinTA Lite does exactly what we want, and the employees like it as that can check the hours they have worked. It helps us monitor our staff to make sure we always comply with the EU Working Time Directive.”

Mark concluded, “The thing I like most about WinTA Lite is the ease of gathering and reviewing data. If anyone has any questions or queries, we have the answers right at hand.” Would Mark recommend Tensor to other companies in the Transport Sector? - “Yes” was the reply, and on describing the service Norfolkline have received from Tensor, Mark said “I would say that Tensor have a good product with excellent customer service.”
