NEW WORKING TIME RULES FOR FLIGHT CREWS Friday 2nd April 2004

The Civil Aviation Working Time Regulations are law from 13th April 2004 and are the UK's implementation of the European Working Time Directive for Mobile Workers working in the civil aviation sector. The regulations apply to all people employed as crew members on board a civil aircraft flying for the purposes of public transport.

In November 2001 Production Manager, Nick Howard, was charged with overseeing the installation of a new Time & Attendance system. The site previously had a Bodet system but it required an expensive upgrade to ensure it would work again, so the company bought a Tensor WinTA Lite Time & Attendance management system. Nick said, " We did look at another system which in comparison with Tensor was expensive and did not have as many features."

MEP'S VOTE TO SCRAP UK OPT-OUT FROM EU WTD Thursday 12th February 2004

The European Parliament voted yesterday to phase out the UK opt-out from the EU Working Time Directive. This vote is likely to be of concern to all UK companies who have yet to install systems for monitoring the hours worked by their employees and have thus far relied on the UK opt-out.

In August 2001 KDM were looking for an electronic system, which would compute employee timekeeping and ensure they were compliant with the EEC Working Time Directive regulations. Without a Time & Attendance system it was increasingly difficult to manage the various staff shifts. They also needed a system that would calculate the driver's hours to ensure they complied with the Working Time Directive.

The EU Employment and Social Affairs Committee have recommended the scrapping of the UK opt-out by the end of 2006. Certain responses have to be in to the Commission by 31st March 2003, but all indications point to UK companies installing T & A systems to handle the legislation by December 2006.
