Applications are invited from school leavers with GCSEs in Science subjects or GVNQs in Computer Science or other software related subjects. Those applying with GCSEs should have grades A to C in Science subjects. Additionally, applicants should have a good working knowledge of PC's and have developed some software programs at school. Preference will be given to applicants who have a knowledge of Visual Basic, .NET and/or "C".
The Apprentice Software Engineer position with Tensor plc is a three year apprenticeship covering the design and development of software for our "Smart Card" and Biometric Time & Attendance, Access Control and Security systems. The software is real-time graphics orientated communicating with the embedded firmware of our "Smart Card" Time & Attendance and Access Control units. Apprentices will work four days a week in the Systems and Software department and one day Day Release at Huntingdon College studying BTECH Levels 1, 2 and 3 in Software Engineering or a similar discipline.
During the first year most of the time will be spent developing and perfecting the apprentice's knowledge of Visual Basic and .NET; and testing of software in a "Windows" environment. Apprentices will be shown how to develop software in an organised controlled way within our Microsoft accredited development environment.
During the second and third years apprentices will also be involved in manning the help-desk to answer customer queries, together with some elements of training users of the Tensor software. There will be some travelling to customer sites to install and test software, as well as customer training.
Applicants must be self-motivated and have a keen interest in PC's and the development of real-time graphics software. Tensor considers both academic qualifications and practical software development skills to be important. However, the most important attribute required of an apprentice is their tenacity and willingness to learn Visual Basic, .NET 5 and "C" programming language and to develop in a structured and organized fashion. Preference will be given to those who can demonstrate a prior knowledge of "Windows" and the ability to develop some software in this environment.
