The only remaining train builder in Britain has had to lay off hundreds of workers based in the Midlands because it says all its contracts, except for some work with London Underground, would be complete by the end of September. Business Secretary Vince Cable said he believed Bombardier had planned to cut jobs in the UK anyway, whether it won the contract or not. Mr Cable told the BBC: "We can't reopen that whole process (tender)."
