Hammonds Furniture is a family furniture business that is passionate about beautiful design, and over the last 90 years, have developed a love of creating the perfect space. They are specialists in fitted bedrooms, wardrobes and home offices that personally oversee every stage, taking the customer’s vision from the drawing board, through to design and final installation.

The company employs 650 people across an estate comprising a head office, 3 manufacturing sites, 50 showroom stores and 17 regional service centres — all are overseen by Head of People, Belinda West. Back in 2018, Belinda was part of a project team that knew the company was too reliant on spreadsheets, short on time, and needed an all-encompassing system to help.

She recalled Hammonds Furniture needed “help on a number of levels, understand who was where and allow our managers to manage.” After considering a number of companies, Hammond Furniture decided to install a Tensor time and attendance system with smart card clocking stations and a new Tensor WinHR.NET HR system. The time and attendance software package included WinTA.NET, which also had the Tensor advanced Fire Roll Call management system; something quite desirable within factories working with timber because of the increased fire risk.

They did consider other customers, and all on the project had experience with other systems but “we chose Tensor because it was easy for managers to operate the system and because it was simple to set up and use — we like things straight forward here as a business. One of our senior managers’ had previous experience with Tensor’s systems too, and he loved it.”

Belinda's great enthusiasm for her work and staff is evident, as she makes constant note of how the Tensor system has improved work for her colleagues. “It’s really empowered the managers to be able to manage more effectively. It’s made a massive difference,” she said.

When asked what she likes about the system, Belinda was quick to reply “it’s given my managers visibility, so that my managers can manage. It’s given them the tools they need — they don’t have to rely on HR and it empowers them to take control.”

She continued: “The sickness and absences management software is fantastic. It’s really powerful. It has a great graphical front-end where you can put the year calendar up all in one go. Being so visual, the managers are confident now about the evidence that they have for good decision making.”

Hammonds Furniture is looking at rolling out the Tensor system across all sites in the coming months and are keen to explore bespoke customisations to utilise the full capabilities of the Tensor system. As such, it came as no surprise that Belinda mentioned she would gladly recommend Tensor to other companies: “I would, yes, I would. It’s simple, easy to use and definitely user-friendly. The reports that I get are invaluable in running the business. When I look back at where we were, and where we are now, and I think it’s certainly transformed the whole way we manage our staff.”
