SMEs are best at maximizing staff talent to boost productivity, research finds
Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) top efficiency charts in terms of maximising staff talent to boost productivity, a study by the UK Commission for Employment Skills (UKCES) has been able to reveal.
The report, Growth through People: Evidence and Analysis, based on interviews with 90,000 small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs), organized companies in five different categories – organisers, developers, recruiters, trainers, free riders, plodders and survivors – based on the adoption of five elements of ‘high performance working’.
The five key attributes of a high performance workplace were categorised as: planning, organisation, skills, rewards and autonomy. These include factors such as providing a bonus scheme and performance-related pay, task variety and flexible working, annual performance reviews and identifying talent.
Based on the aforementioned criteria, the report suggests that 24 per cent of businesses fall into the top two categories of ‘organisers’ and ‘developers’. Employers classed as ‘organisers’ are those which show exemplary planning and organisational ability and which are likely to train and reward employees.
‘Developers’ were classed as businesses that are better than average at planning and training and which give employees the autonomy to add value in the workplace.
