What is ANPR & How Does It Work?
Learn all there is to know about ANPR, including why it is becoming increasingly important for our roads and car parks, as well as how your business can reap the benefits of it.
ANPR - Automatic Number Plate Recognition
As I’m sure you are aware, and as stated above, ANPR stands for Automatic Number Plate Recognition. Summed up, ANPR is essentially a technology that reads vehicle number plates using cameras which can then be compared to a database of registered number plates for traffic, access control, or law enforcement purposes.
How does ANPR work?
ANPR technology uses Optical Character Recognition to convert an image taken of a number plate into an encoded text. The CCTV Camera/ANPR Camera can then register this for the reasons stated above. For example, if you have an ANPR Camera at the entrance and/or exit to your car park then, should the vehicle's registration plate be recognised, access can be granted using your Car Park Barriers and Access Control System.
Car Park Management with ANPR
Automatic Number Plate Recognition Systems and ANPR Cameras have a vast range of benefits for businesses when it comes to car park management, employee management and visitor management. ANPR Cameras are used across many different organisations from the Police, local authorities and also many private companies who want to protect their businesses assets and be in control of vehicles entering and exiting their site.
An Automatic Number Plate Recognition System will also provide an accurate number of free car parking spaces for users when approaching the entrance.
ANPR can also assist with understanding the length of time that a vehicle has been parked in a car park, using timed photographs. Not only this, but should your car park use a ticketing or payment method of parking, then ANPR will make your life easy by automatically registering each number plate and linking it to the payment system.
Where are ANPR Cameras located?
You will typically find ANPR Cameras positioned above motorways and dual-carriageways to give a clear and accurate reading of vehicle registration plates. However, should you be using ANPR for private use and for your own company car park, then you will typically position your ANPR Cameras at both the entrance and exit to work in conjunction with your car park barrier.
