C Developer on Embedded & Linux systems

The C Developer on Embedded & Linux systems position with Tensor involves the design of the software and firmware of our Security and Building Energy Management Systems (see www.tensor.co.uk and  www.heatingsave.co.uk ) systems on our embedded Linux products. Development is in C/C++ porting current Linux kernels to ARM based processors and also creating custom drivers and applications in C/C++.


The role involves

  • Maintenance of existing embedded firmware of mature products ARM7 core and current and future development on peripheral rich MCU using Cortex-M family.
  • Work on the embedded firmware supporting TCP/IP Stack, RS485 and RS232 communications systems with encryption options, data processing of configuration and transaction data
  • Keil development suite used for all development including new products
  • Development and support of our Zigbee Home Automation solution including sensors and actuators using Simplicity Studio and IAR.
  • Development of RFID based product
  • Zigbee development of our Smart Meter and Smart Energy products.

  • Experience in writing portable C/C++ using GCC
  • Experience in or knowledge of;
    • Developing real-time software for embedded control systems (bare metal and RTOS) in C/C#/C++;
    • ARM, Cortex-M0-M4 family and PIC Microcontrollers;
    • Instrumentation and control algorithms;
  • Good understanding of networking protocols
  • Good working knowledge of ARM-based hardware, including memory/bus/communication interfaces.
  • Understanding of relational database design and implementation with MySQL
  • UNIX Shell scripting
  • Linux kernel development and debugging
  • Competent with version-control using Subversion.


You additional preferred skills would include,

  • Experience in the design and implementation of wireless communications, Zigbee style wireless mesh networks, Wifi, BLE, Lora.
  • Knowledge of boot-loaders, kernels, drivers, application interfacing, POSIX threads, networking and current embedded Linux kernel build environments.
  • Experience with Gentoo Linux
  • SQLite, MS SQL and Oracle
  • PHP, JavaScript, JQuery and HTML5
  • U-Boot

Salary £25,000 – £35,000 per annum (dependent upon experience) with 20 days annual leave + Bank/Public Holidays + Company pension scheme available.
