Software Tester

The role of Software Tester is based at Tensor’s offices in Hail Weston, Cambridgeshire. The job involves testing our range of software products in conjunction with our Smart Card & Biometric Technology. Although the main focus of the role is to test the software and firmware, there will also be an element of system testing and sometimes hardware testing, in order to ensure that the entire Tensor system & product works correctly when simulated as a customer system installed at a customer site.

An analytical and methodical approach to problem solving is essential and you must be able to work using your own initiative. The Software Tester is also expected to perform pre-installation quality and configuration checks on any Tensor software, paying special attention to the firmware and how the firmware and software interacts with the proposed software version that is to be installed.

The Software Tester reports to the Systems Director and will work as part of the Testing Department. They will use best practice, previous experience and any test tools available to ensure that testing of Tensor’s software and firmware is thorough and as efficient as possible. The role may also require the use and creation of automated tests.


The main objectives of the Software Tester are :

– To conduct full testing of Tensor’s software and firmware products to ensure that any software or firmware issues/bugs are identified at Tensor and are not installed at customer sites.

– To conduct destructive testing of software and firmware to discover and fully document how Tensor products behave when used outside of the specification.

– To conduct tests and advise the Helpdesk, Systems Department, Operations Department and Sales Department (and Production Department if required) of suitable configurations of hardware, firmware and software that are to be used and to ensure compatibility between Tensor’s hardware and software products.

– To conduct system tests of the Tensor products paying special attention to how the software and firmware operates when ran with the hardware.

– To test brand new products and products under development in conjunction with the Software Development Department to identify any faults or provide advice on how the products can be improved.

– To assist the Helpdesk in constantly developing and improving the FAQ sites, Support sites and third party Helpdesk Test Scripts.


Previous technical experience of at least one year in a test environment is required to undertake this role.

Job Benefits

Salary is £18,000 – £20,000 per annum dependant upon experience.
