New initiative aims to bolster construction site security in Ireland

Vehicle management

The police force in the Republic of Ireland, the An Garda Síochána, has launched an initiative aimed at raising awareness of security shortcomings in the construction sector and bolstering construction site security, a news report can reveal.

An Garda Síochána and The Construction Industry Federation are taking a proactive role to crime prevention in the construction industry, which has historically has been targeted by criminals, with the launch of the Secure It, Keep It campaign.

The force pointed out that approximately €7.8 million worth of items were stolen from construction sites nationally in 2017, €6.3 million of which were tools. There’s also been a rise of 35% in construction crime throughout the country, reaching a total of 4,562 incidents.

Building sites are by nature easy targets for criminals due to the types of materials, tools and machinery on site. Construction crime can involve thefts from vehicles, burglary, unauthorised taking of vehicles, criminal damage and trespassing.

The An Garda Síochána and the Construction Industry Federation have a few suggestions regarding the measures companies can implement in order to improve construction site security, such as setting up CCTV, deploying good security lighting, fences or hoardings and also keeping the number of gates to site entrance to a minimum.

Further measures to be deployed include controlling access to the site, adding security locks and ground fixings for extra security, storing tools in a secure area and marking tools with a unique identification number.
