Number of working days lost due to absence falls to record low, CIPD survey finds

Employee booking

Time and attendance systems deliver excellent results when dealing with absence management, but the opposite is also true, and they will likely become even more important as the issue of presenteeism – people coming into work while ill – is becoming an increasingly important matter.

In fact, the number of lost working days due to absence has fallen to a record low number according to recent figures by ONS, who had revealed UK workers have taken an average number of just 4.1 sick days in 2017, compared with 7.2 days in 1993.

Research by the Centre of Mental shows Presenteeism from Mental Health alone is estimated to cost the UK economy £15.1 billion per annum, compared to £8.4 billion per annum for absenteeism.

Naturally, with more interest in the phenomenon by researchers, there are a range of solutions that have been suggested to overcome presenteeism. One of the best ways to address presenteeism is to implement an effective health management strategy that engages employees and supports them in improving their well-being.

However, one of the most important issues is identifying members of staff that might be affected by this phenomenon, and this is exactly where the Tensor Time and Attendance systems can help.

Tensor Time and Attendance Systems – the perfect employee monitoring solutions to address the issue of presenteeism

A top-range time and attendance monitoring system can easily determine the best strategies to tackle the problem of excessive presenteeism and determine employers to set comprehensive policies to support employers in dealing with sickness absence.

The Tensor WinTA.NET integrated time and attendance system and workforce management solution incorporates a dedicated Absence Planning and Entitlement Management feature. It comes pre-loaded with graphical calendar charts that provide a colourful way of viewing an individual’s or a department’s absence records.

Each employee can be allocated different entitlements for absence such as annual leave or allowed sickness. As absence is booked and taken, the remainder available for each entitlement is updated. Entitlement formulae are used to calculate more complex entitlements calculated on a rising scale based upon length of service.
