Apple’s new iPhone 5S likely to make biometric authentication more popular with mainstream consumers

The release of Apple’s new top-range smartphone, the iPhone 5S, that comes equipped with a fingerprint sensor embedded in the home button, is quite likely to make biometric authentication more popular with mainstream consumers, who rarely used such a system before (if ever).

While the implementation of such a module has immediately raised some serious concerns regarding the security of personnel data, the truth of the matter is that fingerprint readers and the other biometrics-based authentication products available on the market provide a significantly higher level of security than simple passwords.

As a market leader in the field of access control and time and attendance solutions, Tensor also supplies an extensive range of products that actively employ biometric authentication.

The biometric readers in Tensor’s T34xx series feature an elegant case and are easy to use. They target specifically those users who want the absolute peace-of-mind, certainty and the assurance that only the right people can gain access to your sensitive or dangerous areas.

The device supports two distinct functioning modes (either Biometric only or Smart Card & Biometric) for extensive access control options and supports a variety of smart card models, such as HID Prox™, HID iClass™, MiFare™, and DesFire™ cards.

The device is built around an 266MHz 32bit iMX21 ARM926EJ-S MCU, accompanied by a flash memory module (32Mbit standard up to 512Mbit build dependent) and a SDRAM module (64Mbit standard up to 256Mbit build dependent).

The biometrics solution supports Control and Reset functions, and also comes equipped with a range of connectivity options, such as one RS485 interface to clock and External Scanner interface, 1 port with full modem control ( Modem RS232 Interface) and 2 SPI ports (one port is used for scanner interface).
