British companies plan to hire fewer people in Q4, study reveals

UK companies have dramatically slashed their hiring intentions for Q4, 2014, with the national outlook reaching +6%, down from +8% in the previous three months, data published in the most recent Manpower Employment Outlook Survey was able to reveal.

The research, which is based on a poll of 2,102 employers, also pointed out that manufacturing had the biggest jump in hiring intentions, namely up from +4% to +10% in Q4, as well as being nine percentage points higher than this time last year.

On the other hand, finance and business sector had the biggest annual decrease in hiring intentions, down from +17% for Q4 2013 to +12% for Q4 this year.

ManpowerGroup managing director James Hick told HR magazine jobseekers should be looking to make themselves attractive to employers looking for highly-skilled workers.

“The sectors where people have specialist skills are looking for the most new staff and have the fewest available candidates,” he said.

“This is where the jobs are. We’re seeing an hourglass jobs market where workers with high skills are finding much more work than what we’d call primary or secondary decision makers.”
