Energy savings hindered by lack of accurate monitoring tools, research reveals

A large number of a facilities and energy managers, while quite enthusiastic about the idea of cutting consumption, still feel hindered by the lack of tools to accurately monitor their energy usage, recent survey by the British Institute of Facilities Management (BIFM) and the National Energy Foundation (NEF) suggests.

Figures obtained from this report suggest that 90% of all energy managers are well aware of their yearly energy costs, but just around 50% of them knew just how well the buildings performed compared to their design.

Furthermore, close to 30% of managers hadn’t considered comparing the buildings’ performance over an extensive period of time, while another 60% still relied on monthly consumption in order to monitor and manage energy expenditure.

Nevertheless, 40% of respondents admitted that they’re actively using a Building Energy Management system in order to oversee costs, while 50% of energy managers answering the poll cited “technology” as the most important factor in improving the use of energy.

Kerry Mashford, CEO of NEF said: “FM professionals are uniquely placed to tackle the gap between predicted and actual energy performance in buildings but are constrained by a lack of access to the scope and quality of data they need.

“This barrier persists, hampering both comparison over time and external benchmarking initiatives”.
