Installed Base of Access Control Measures to Reach 2.3 Billion Units in 2016, Report Suggests

The total installed base of access-control readers, panels, credentials and electronic locks is expected to reach an estimated 2.3 billion units in 2016 — up 27.8% on 2012, a recent market research report from IHS Markit has been able to suggest.

The company's latest "Access Control Intelligence Database — Installed Base" report points out that credentials like access control cards and fobs account for the vast majority — 95% — of this market, fuelled by their high turnover (because employees move jobs and regularly lose their cards).

Except for credentials, panels have the largest percentage in terms of deployed access control hardware and accessories, with 18.8% of all installed hardware and 38.3% of revenue. Electronic locks come second, making up 16.7% of the installed base, while readers come third, at 16.6%.

As far as the specific users are concerned, the commercial sector accounts for the largest portion of the installed base, with 495 million units and a 21.6% share, followed by governmental (17.1%) installations. Nevertheless, the residential sector is catching up fast, growing at a compound annual growth rate of 7.4% between 2012-2016.
