Last month, Tensor donated to local school, Priory Junior, and their book-themed raffle as part of their World Book Day celebrations! Pupils could dress up as their favourite book characters on the 5th March and during the week, the school ran a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory inspired 'Wonder Bar' competition.
The pupils bought chocolate bars, which were wrapped in sponsored wrappers, and some of the bars had a 'golden ticket' inside. Tensor's money helped buy some of the bars and wrappers needed for the competition. The funds raised will be used for additional resources for the school, while providing a fun activity for pupils based on theme 'World Book Day'.
World Book Day was established in 1995 by UNESCO as part of a global initiative to promote literacy, publishing, and copyright. The original date chosen by UNESCO was April 23rd but due to cultural and national differences, the day is celebrated on different days globally. This year, World Book Day was celebrated on 5th of March in the UK and Ireland.
According to the World Book Day charity, reading for fun is one of the biggest indicators that a child will grow up to have a happier and more successful future. However, only one in three children enjoy reading. While this isn't surprising given the wealth of entertainment options available today, it highlights the importance of events that promote reading among children. By offering £1 book vouchers, World Book Day breaks down the barrier of affordability that hinders many children's access to books.
Reading is perhaps the most important skill you can learn in school. As a foundational skill, reading amplifies almost everything else. From learning faster, to understanding instructions with more confidence, the impact of reading continues for the rest of their lives.
