Ireland’s police force, the Garda Síochána, plans to increase the level of video surveillance across the country by boosting its CCTV and ANPR set-ups and also introducing facial and body-in-a-crowd biometrics technologies, a news report has been able to reveal.

The Garda is seeking to introduce new “advanced IT systems” which will cost more than €200m to roll out, the force has revealed within its 120-page Modernisation and Renewal Programme 2016-2021 paper.

As part of the Enterprise Content Management system, the programme will also feature an “expansion” of video surveillance technologies, including “CCTV, ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition),” and introducing biometric technologies, namely facial and body-in-a-crowd recognition, “to identify key criminal and terrorist targets.”

Asked about the legal situation regarding the planned expansion in surveillance technologies, and the introduction of facial and body-in-a-crowd recognition, a Garda Síochána spokesperson said: “A possible response is that all initiatives outlined in the Modernisation and Renewal Programme will be assessed against and will conform with current legislation.”

Tensor – international experts in deployment of facial recognition CCTV and biometric identification systems

Tensor has an extensive experience in installing facial recognition CCTV systems and commissioning comprehensive video management solutions for large multi-site facilities. Our expertise and technical know-how enables us to easily integrate video surveillance into other security systems including ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition), Access Control and Facial Recognition CCTV to name a few, in order to enhance and improve the security and efficiency at your site.

Tensor face biometrics are used to identify users from access control lists and verify their identity. Our access control solution facilitates user management at runtime and allows users to be enrolled on-the-fly by video capture.

Facial recognition CCTV technology yields excellent performance despite partial occlusions of the face, the use of glasses, scarves or caps, changes of facial expression, and moderate rotations of the face. Moreover, it does not allow users to be impersonated using photographs. Tensor biometric technology is the perfect solution to control the access of personnel to restricted security areas.
