Employees that are not properly motivated and experience various health-related problems work well-below peak productivity and are actually holding back potential growth, causing British companies to lose up to £6 billion a year, a brand new research report has revealed.

The study of 5,000 UK workers carried out by private healthcare firm Bupa has revealed that 50% of employees rarely go ‘above and beyond’ at work because they think they won’t be acknowledged or rewarded, while only a staggering 7% of employees said they are working to their full potential.

Figures obtained from this research also revealed that only 41% of employees actually work at their peak physical level, while 29% claim of not being able to properly focus at work due to poor health.

Unfortunately, the lack of motivation is partly caused by the fact that companies are not willing to seriously and reliably commit to invest in their employee’s well being, according to 70% of people participating in the poll.

Furthermore, about 60% of employees don’t expect their employer to do anything to help them to be less stressed, healthier, more physically fit, feel more valued or have a better work-life balance.

Bupa, corporate director, Patrick Watt, said: “This is a wake-up call for employers, it shows that many employees are not engaged or motivated, which has a big impact on a businesses performance and productivity.”
