Majority of UK managers work above their contracted weekly hours

The vast majority (over 94%) of managers in the UK work above their contracted hours each week, either in the office or at home, new research from the Institute of Leadership Management (ILM) was able to reveal.

The survey probed a sample of 1,000 members and also found that 53% of managers consider their workload to be the main contributor to working overtime. While some admitted this pressure was self-inflicted, 44% said they felt direct pressure from their line manager.

Furthermore, nearly half of the respondents (47%) polled work at least one additional day (7.5 hours or more) of overtime per week.

Charles Elvin, chief executive of the ILM, commented: “Excessive hours are not sustainable – there are only so many times you can burn the midnight oil before your performance, decision making and wellbeing begin to suffer.”

“This is why it’s so important for organisations to equip staff with the fundamental planning and time management skills they need to cope with their workloads more effectively” he added.

Tensor is a UK market leader in the field of workforce management solutions and in the ideal position to supply advanced solutions capable of making life a little easier for managers at all levels.

Our WinTA.NET solution handles all frequently used methods of calculating employee hours, from simple determination of overtime by the number of daily hours worked, to the more complex payment of overtime hours adjusted when periodic targets are not met.

The system allows you to create a series of shift premium rules that enable employees to earn bonus payments under special circumstances. The bonus is calculated either as extra hours or monetary amounts and can be included in the export to payroll.

A major requirement of any Time & Attendance system is the ability to export information to the payroll system. Tensor is the leader in this field and has worked with all of the major payroll packages. WinTA.NET has a wide range of configuration options to extract payroll information in exactly the correct format.

It can share or receive information from 3rd party applications by using readily available interface modules. Data transfers can occur either on demand or more usually as an automated process.
