Organizations to focus on hiring young jobseekers, CIPD report suggests
The number of employers who are seriously considering hiring young jobseekers has recorded a significant growth over the past quarter, recent data from CIPD’s latest Labour Market Outlook (LMO) has been able to reveal.
The report suggests that 33 per cent of organisations with ‘hard-to-fill vacancies’ are planning to hire more young people to fill the gaps, which represents a marked increase in hiring intentions compared with the previous spring quarter when just 22 per cent planned to increase their recruitment activity among this age group.
More than a quarter (26 per cent) of survey respondents said they wanted to hire more graduates, while 12 per cent plan to recruit more school leavers, which is a big increase compared with 9 per cent reported in the spring 2014 LMO.
Gerwyn Davies, CIPD labour market analyst, said: “After a long, dark decade, the prospects for young people are finally looking brighter. The tightening labour market is undoubtedly encouraging more employers to turn to a wider range of younger recruits. However, it is also due to a recognition among a growing number of employers that they need to develop talent to limit the potential for future labour shortages and pay pressures.”
The summer LMO suggests that overall employment confidence is set to remain strong for the next three months as this quarter’s net employment balance – which measures the difference between the proportion of employers who expect to increase and those that intend to decrease staff levels – has increased to +29, up from the +24 reported in Spring 2015.
