Close to a third of small and medium businesses are not properly upholding employee rights legislation by not offering flexible working arrangements to staff, a recent media news report into this matter was able to reveal.

Research carried out by business software and services provider Sage UK has revealed that almost ten percent of all SMEs are completely unaware that from 30 June this year, all employees were given the statutory right to request flexible working after 26 weeks employment service.

Further statistical data obtained from this study would suggest that nearly half (46%) of employers believe they have the technology in place to support flexible working, while 40 per cent said flexible working will be expensive to implement. Finally, 26 per cent have revealed that they already offer flexible working as standard to all employees.

Updated flexible working guidelines would not only give employees greater choice, but it could afford a business to be more productive, flexible and efficient. In fact, close to a third (32%) of employers believe the initiative will bring working arrangements into the 21st Century, and another 30 per cent believe flexible working will boost employee productivity.

The implementation of a powerful and intelligent workforce management system could help reduce the burden on Offices Services and Admin departments, and Tensor’s WinTA.NET solution is the most solid, reliable and cost-effective solution to this serious problem.

The system can supply working rules for a variety of purposes, from simple determination of overtime by the number of daily hours worked, to the more complex payment of overtime hours adjusted when periodic targets are not met. The system also contains special rules to accommodate the formal flexitime contracts worked by many public sector employees. Workers paid on an annual contract basis can receive reports stating how many contracted hours they have yet to work.
