Transport networks shifting to real-life IP-based CCTV Surveillance

The majority of transport networks across Western Europe are migrating their CCTV surveillance systems to IP-based solutions, in a move aimed at improving the level of security and safety for staff and passengers alike, an industry report has been able to suggest.

More than 85 per cent of networks are looking at installing internet protocol (IP) cameras instead of analogue CCTV technology, in a move that would help operators use real-time analytics to enhance decision making. This could involve anything from the rather standard common platform changes to more infrequent critical scenarios (responses to a security threat or emergency).

Using IP-based networked cameras would also enable the significantly faster deployment of advanced machine learning technology, which identifies what is 'normal' activity within a scene, automatically creating an alert if 'abnormal' activity is recognised.

IP-based CCTV surveillance systems would also enable the easier implementation of facial recognition systems, capable of scanning through live videos and identifying people of interest, thereby significantly boosting security.
