In one of the most ambitious investments plans to date, the Government has revealed its ‘Road investment strategy’, which will see £15 billion invested in order to increase the capacity and condition of England’s roads.

Over 1,300 new lane miles will be added by schemes being delivered over the next parliament on motorways and trunk roads, tackling congestion and fixing some of the most notorious and longstanding problem areas on the network.

Some of the most interesting developments announced today include a commitment of £2 billion to dual the entire A303 and A358 to the south west, including a tunnel at Stonehenge and setting aside £290 million to complete the dualling of the A1 from London to Ellingham.

In the south east, funding of around £350 million will be provided for improvements to the A27 along the south coast, tackling severe congestion at Arundel, Worthing and Lewes. The government also plans to invest £300 million to upgrade the east-west connection to Norfolk, by dualling sections of the A47 and improving its connections to the A1 and A11, building on the recently completed full dualling of the A11 from London to Norwich.

Last, but certainly not least, London and the south east will benefit from the improvements done to one-third of the junctions on the entire M25.

The strategy also contains measures to improve the lives of communities affected by road upgrades and it’s estimated that more than 6,000 new jobs will be created in the process.

In order to properly capitalize on their growth prospects, firms of any size involved in the future road construction and improvement projects should also seriously consider the implementation of solid and reliable workforce management solutions, and this is specifically where Tensor could put its extensive experience in the field to very good use.
