UK job vacancies hit fastest growth rate in 15 years

The growth in UK job vacancies managed to record its fastest rate in 15 years this November, according to a report produced by the research firm Markit on behalf of the body that represents recruitment firms.

The report, sponsored by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation, uses data gathered from 400 recruitment firms for compiling a very comprehensive job vacancies index. Figures published in this report revealed that the index rose to the highest level since July 1998, but also showed that growth in salaries for permanent staff was the highest in six years.

Although demand for staff is high, the availability of candidates to fill permanent and temporary posts fell in November, as Bernard Brown, partner and head of business services at KPMG, one of the report's sponsors, explains: "It may be that people are still worried about job security but it is more likely that we are seeing a return of the traditional winter slowdown in recruitment as staff are more focused on Christmas than careers."

It's also quite interesting to note that a separate report published by accounting company BDO revealed that business confidence grew in October for the tenth consecutive month, mostly due to the fact that growth in the first half of next year is likely to be "robust".
