UK jobs vacancies rise against drop in advertised salaries, report reveals

The number of advertised jobs vacancies has risen over the course of March by 24% compared to the previous year, but the average starting salary has decreased by £1,800 over the same interval, a new report released by recruitment company Adzuna has recently revealed.

Statistical figures obtained from research that involves more than 300 job advertisers also suggest that the number of jobs advertised in March was 5.3% higher than the previous month, with 841,011 roles advertised. Nevertheless, the average salary of these positions was £31,818, down from £32,203 in February and over £33,600 in March 2013.

Adzuna’s analysts believe that the change was due to a shift from public to private sector jobs, the former being typically associated to an average salary premium of between 2.2% and 3.1%. London was particularly affected by this trend but, nevertheless, for every public sector job lost in the capital since 2011, eight private sector jobs have been created.

Adzuna co-founder Andrew Hunter commented on these findings: “Output and demand are increasing, and as talent becomes harder to source, employers will need to start increasing wages in order to attract the best staff,” he said.
