Shift sharing used by Unity mine workers to stop job losses
Management and union officials from the Unity Mine in Cwmgwrach in the Vale of Neath, Wales, have managed to work together in order to create a “rota system” designed to prevent major job loses.
As a news report in the media has revealed, due to a fall in the price of coal and reduced demand, mine workers feared that around 150 jobs from the total 226 workforce were in danger of being made redundant.
And in order to mitigate this problem and save as many jobs as possible, the workers agreed that work will now be shared out between all 226 workers on a rota basis.
While such an initiative is quite interesting and potentially very beneficial for the staff involved, the truth of the matter is that it will certainly require a very solid shift management system to cope with the shift-sharing process, and this is specifically where Tensor can put its extensive experience to very good use.
The Tensor WinTA.NET software suite is a complete smart card time and attendance system including European Working Time Regulations checking and reporting, ensuring that your company remains compliant with both regional and national legislation.
The system supports all of the frequently used methods of calculating employee hours and also contains special rules to accommodate the formal flexitime contracts worked by many public sector employees. Workers paid on an annual contract basis can receive reports stating how many contracted hours they have yet to work.
The WinTA.NET system also supports the implementation of work patterns, a combination of daily rules that are either a repeating pattern of shifts or a list of alternative rules and can even predict the most appropriate shift depending on the time an employee clocks IN. Each type of pattern can be set up to override the normal pattern and use a specific shift on public holidays or shutdown days.
