The value of work experience is becoming more important to employers, report claims

Employers are becoming much more interested in hiring young people with previous work experience, as they can adapt easier and faster to any working environment, a new report by the UK Commission For Employment And Skills (UKCES) claims.

As a media report on this topic suggests, close to 45% of employers see experience as significant in selection, with 29% stating that it is crucial. On the downside, the lack of work experience is one of the most common reason employers reject candidates.

Unfortunately, relatively few companies offer work placement and work experience programmes, namely just an estimated 27%. Nevertheless, that’s a lot better than in 2012, when just around 18% of employers offered such opportunities.

The UK Commission For Employment And Skills paper also suggests that most companies avoided setting up work experience programmes for 16 – 17-year-olds due specifically to the very strict employment laws regarding them, but since those rules were relaxed by the Government, the trend has changed.

Thus, current employees who manage young people no longer have to go through the enhanced disclosure and barring service checks (formerly CRB), which prevents a lengthy process that can delay start dates and prove costly for companies, especially SMEs.

Companies who do decide to offer work placement schemes should also seriously consider the implementation of a very solid and reliable workforce management system beforehand, in order to make life easier for HR departments and also enable managers to evaluate their overall performance.
