A man has been charged in connection with two bank robberies that occurred in the space of 24 hours. Officers said cash was stolen from Yorkshire Bank on Princes Avenue on February 5 in Hull, and from the nearby NatWest the next day. Police have appealed for the return of a “significant quantity” of money. A 42-year-old man from the area was due to appear before magistrates today (Monday, February 11).

An employment tribunal ruled that a local authority had not provided information to a trade union on matters such as a collective redundancy consultation in 2012. The case involved breaches of the Agency Workers Regulations (AWRs) for dozens of workers at Barnet Council. The AWRs were introduced in October 2011 to provide greater parity of pay and conditions for long serving temporary staff.

The exact cause of a fire at a hospital is currently being investigated, but it is believed to be accidental. Twenty-seven patients needed to evacuated from the building following the late-night blaze at the Wrexham-based wards. The patients were led to safety to be relocated at another part of the hospital. Four fire crews found a small fire on the ground floor, which was extinguished in a short period of time, and as a result two wards were cleared.

Hundreds of pounds were stolen from a wine merchant after a shotgun was brandished at a shopkeeper. The armed robbers were dressed in yellow fluorescent clothing and escaped in the shop’s own van. The silver Renault, which was branded with the Swansea merchant’s trade dress, was recovered at a nearby location an hour later.

Police searches of a council candidate’s home and a fast-food takeaway business he owned revealed copies of forged documents. It was part of the evidence which convicted Cencizham Cerit to 12 months in prison for electoral fraud. He was found guilty of forging the signatures of his tenants to try and win an election in November 2011. Canterbury Crown Court heard Cerit delivered 200 postal vote applications to Ashford Borough Council that contained bogus signatures. More than one-third of UK organisations are considering redundancies or job shedding in 2013, a survey has found. A shop owner lamented that hundreds of jewellery items had been taken in a raid last lasted just a few minutes late on Sunday. The case of a stolen museum jug has been closed following a conviction. The theft of the Wenlok Jug was featured on the BBC Crimewatch programme where CCTV images of the suspect were shown. Nine-hundred and thirty jobs will go, the administrators of HMV have confirmed. Deloitte said that 66 of the troubled retailer’s stores will close over the next two months. In addition, about 190 posts have already been axed across the music giant’s head office and distribution network. The 66 stores would continue to trade in the meantime. “This step has been taken in order to enhance the prospects of securing the business’s future as a going concern,” said a statement from Deloitte. Cash gathered by friends of a boy who drowned in a swimming accident has been taken. A mayor says he wants his city’s council to be run like a business. George Ferguson was elected as the first mayor of Bristol late last year, and one of his more immediate concerns is how to cut £35 million in spending, or around nine per cent of the council budget. Mr Ferguson said 330 jobs must be cut when he revealed his proposed budget. The new mayor estimated that approximately 100 compulsory redundancies would need to be made. Power station workers have walked out over onsite facilities. An anonymous worker at Runcorn Thermal Power Station said the absence of a medical centre and water stations were an “absolute disgrace”. He added: “Until they sign a letter saying they will upgrade the facilities, this action will continue.” He said workers would boycott the site until Monday (January 14), when another meeting will be held to discuss the situation. Approximately 600 workers have been taking unofficial action since Monday.
