A new study by MPs dealing with the public accounts has questioned if ministers and their departments can come up with the savings required from the public purse. The Members’ body said: "The inability of departments to improve value for money in a time of increasing budgets casts doubts on government's ability to reduce costs now while minimising the impact on front-line services." A cost-cutting measure is seeing some public toilets in Exeter under threat of closure by the city council. The council said: "We appreciate that any closure of a public toilet will be an inconvenience to someone, because that person may either have to walk a little further to the next public toilet, use a customer toilet when they are visiting a shop, cafe or public house, or pay to use a privately run public convenience such as in Princesshay,” adding that a minimum of 16 public conveniences will remain. Police are hunting a gang seen running away from a scene of suspected arson at a care home in the West Country. The alleged criminal act took place on the outskirts of the Gloucestershire building, which takes care of elderly and vulnerable people. The fire was extinguished by firefighters before it spread to the home. Inspector Tony Rymer, of Gloucester Police, said: "This is being seen as a crime of arson. Youths wearing hoodies were seen running away from the home in the direction of Tesco." Record numbers of primary school children skipped lessons without permission last year. The Department for Education has revealed that the number of primary age youngsters skipping class continues to rise. The figures show that primary pupils skipped 0.68 per cent of half days, up from 0.65% for the same terms in 2008/09, and 0.52% three years ago in 2006/07. The statistics suggest that 22,700 primary pupils missed class on a typical school day in 2009/10 through truancy, family holidays, illness and other reasons. Six elderly people were injured in a fire at a residential home in the north west. Firefighters rescued five of the victims and five others were led to safety shortly before crews arrived. Sandwell Council in Birmingham has defended its handling of an arts centre which has gone over budget. Council leader Darren Cooper said: “In the medium term financial plan, the council has allocated £1.5m for The Public per annum,” referring to the centre. “It is not anticipated that this will change in the next financial year. However, the council has yet to set its budget for 2011/12 and this allocation will be reviewed before the budget is finalised. In the past we have only given the management £1.1m. CCTV released by South Wales Police shows how a staff member in a Llandaff store was threatened by a man and forced to hand over cash. Officers want to speak to a man who bought the same type of mask the robber was wearing. Although the masks are widely available, officers wish to eliminate this man from their enquiries. Llandaff councillor Kirsty Davies expressed concern for staff at the store because they are “quite young.” She added: “I just really think it’s horrendous for staff and maybe they need to get tighter security.” For small scale but top quality access control, the T3512 Low Cost One Scanner System is the solution.
