Majority of UK employees are stressed by holiday, research suggests

Tensor time and attendance systems for absence monitoring

Almost three quarters of UK employees are stressed and worried about taking time off, recent figures from the Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM) have been able to reveal.

The survey found that more than two-thirds (68%) of respondents worked late the day before their holiday began, and almost one in five (18%) said they return to work more stressed than when they left. It also revealed that 61% of workers feel obligated to work while on holiday, 64% read and send emails and 8% go into their workplace during their time off.

At the end of the year more than half (54%) of employees have holiday entitlement left, and 42% of managers have needed to encourage their staff to take a break in the past.

Charles Elvin, chief executive of the ILM, said that it is crucial that people are able to make the most of their time off work to fully relax, reflect and recharge. “This allows them fresh perspective and energy to tackle their work on return from holiday,” he said.

With Tensor WinTA.NET, holiday management has never been easier

Companies who’re looking out for their employees’ best interests should also consider implementing a solid and reliable time and attendance system designed to offer HR and department managers a clear overview of all holiday bookings and approve (or disallow) them accordingly.

That’s exactly the case with Tensor’s WinTA.NET system, which supports extensive Absence Planning and Entitlement Management. The built-in graphical calendar charts provide a colourful way of viewing an individual’s or a department’s absence records, and each employee can be allocated different entitlements for absence such as annual leave or allowed sickness.

As absence is booked and taken, the remainder available for each entitlement is updated. Entitlement formulae are used to calculate more complex entitlements calculated on a rising scale based upon length of service.

WinTA.NET provides this information through warning email notifications or via hardcopy reports. The system quickly identifies missing employees that are expected to be at work and then informs you via automatic email reporting reports distributed by email.
